When Anju Loved Being an Elephant by Wendy Henrichs

Growing up on the Indonesian island of Sumatra with its cooling lakes and refreshing mud holes, Anju loved being an elephant. Loving cared for and proetected by her mother and herd family, there was nowhere else Anju would rather be.
That all changed when she was stolen and sold to an American circus. Anju spends decades traveling across the country, entertaining crowds. After the circus, she's then moved to a small zoo for 23 years, their lone elephant. Anju no longer loved being an elephant. She was old and tired. Will Anju ever love being an elephant again?

    About the Author
Wendy Henrich's love of animals expresses itself in the stories she writes for children. In researching elephants, she was struck by their deep family connections and emotional needs so closely resembling those of humans. Wendy lives in Iowa City, Iowa.

John Butler has illustrated more than 40 children's books, including A Mama for Owen, the true story of the African baby hippo that, separated from his mother during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, bonded with a giant tortoise. John lives in England.

Conjunction-junction, what's your function? Author Rick Walton knows, and he's delivered another delightful children's book in the language arts series to teach budding new readers all about them. Conjunctions are used to link words, phrases, and clauses, but who knew that they could be so clever!

"After the game we decided to see a play. The city is famous for its plays. We entered the theater. We had trouble finding just the right seats, AS . . .

    . . . all the seats were already filled, SO . . .

. . . we sat on people's laps. We don't know why everyone decided to leave early, THOUGH. . .

. . . it might have been that the show was about cats. Who wants to see a show about cats? We left the theater.

And then the rats saw the sign, "Museum of Fine Arts". Rats don't read well. They insisted we go in BECAUSE . . . . . . they thought it said, "Museum of Fine Rats."

Why the Banana Split, By Rick Walton

Fun kids book, click here to purchase...

The creators of Pig, Pigger, Piggest here dish out a kid-tickling serving of humor, illustrating a sequence of punning variations on verb phrases that can all be translated, roughly, to mean "exit." This is exactly what the characters (some human, most not) do when a gigantic dinosaur appears, baring his enormous, sharp teeth. Jump ropes "skipped town," astronauts "took off," frogs "hopped a train" that then "made tracks" and (in a triple whammy) "the bananas split, peeled out, slipped away." Walton stretches his concept with some of the entries (e.g., baseball players "struck out on their own" and trees "took their leaves") and indulges in several groaners (shoppers say "Good buy," and shopkeepers add, "Buy buy"). Depicting amusingly frantic faces on a variety of inanimate objects, Holder's stylized, fittingly exaggerated cartoons will wring chuckles from the audience. Although their worldlier parents may want to take a hike from the one-joke wordplay, kids riveted by puns will guffaw. Ages 4-8.

True to Life, by Duane Ashley Poole

In a rap-like cadence comes-the poetry of youth - words that echo of love, hope and higher inspiration.

Love is priceless love doesn't care if you are rich or poor.
Money cannot buy love, so it's not about who has more!.
Love is embracing, nurturing, strength, and support.
Love stays with you through the good and bad, never selling you short.
Love is doing good deeds, without a conscious of giving.
Love is the ultimate, and all that this world needs to heal the living.
Love exists for everyone in this world, love doesn't discriminate.
Love's the savior of all humanity, that will rid hatred, war, and heartache.

    From "Love"

I could visit the Great Wall of China, Statue of liberty, Big Ben and the Taj Mahal.
Only to find out none of them conquer you because you're the finest of them all.
I could go to visit Africa on a wild life safari and observe the king of the jungle.
To find out you're the only person alive who can make me humble.
Because nothing in the world captivates me, or moves me the way that you do.
You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen that's why nothing compares to you!.

Hawaiian Sunrise to Sunset~by Randall Ng

    Tough Love Is Real Love

You might think that living in Hawaii and working with kids all day sounds like Paradise. But the reality of working as a middle school counselor, servicing kids in a low-income neighborhood, is very different. Told as the story of a typical working day, Hawaiian Sunrise to Sunset gives an inspiring, eye-opening, and sobering view into the life of a man who has dedicated all his resources to making children's lives better. Randall Ng's students run the gamut from gifted to gang members; from at-risk to motivated; from safe in loving families to abused by parents and caregivers. Randall knows that to make a difference in the lives of these kids, he has to go above and beyond the call of duty, and he has to think outside the box. Randall transcends the typical role of school counselor, as he visits students at home, confronts them and their parents with the truth, finds wildly creative solutions to problems with no easy answer, and steps in as a father figure to children who have never known a reliable and caring authority. Surprising, shocking, fascinating, and ultimately deeply redemptive, this book shows you what tough love looks like, and what it can accomplish in the lives of children at risk.

    About the Author:

Randall Ng worked in the Hawaii State Department of Education for over 33 years as a classroom teacher, and as a campus, outreach, and grade level counselor. He has a bachelor's degree in history from Texas A&M University, with a minor in political science. In 1967, he graduated from University of Hawaii with a professional teacher's certificate in secondary education. Awards and recognition during Mr. Ng's career have included the 2005 Hawaii State Teacher Association's "Friend of Youth" award, and a 2002 award from the Hawaii State Senate for his counseling department's efforts to promote a safe, healthy, and drug-free lifestyle among his school's students.

    Lipman Pike~by R. Michelson

Lipman Pike: America's First Home Run King

In the mid 1800s the sport of baseball was working its way across the United States. Amateur teams were springing up and in 1858 the National Association of Base Ball Players was formed. Young men were eager to show their prowess on the field and in the batter’s box.

Lipman Pike’s father, a Dutch immigrant, runs a small haberdashery in Brooklyn, New York, though Lip is more interested in watching the ball players than working behind the counter. His mother doesn’t approve—Jewish boys should be paying attention to more sensible matters. But when Lip is barely a teenager, he’s invited to join the Nationals Junior Club and play first base. When he hits his first pitch over the right fielder’s head, Lip knows baseball is the sport for him.

Award-winning author Richard Michelson chronicles the meteoric rise of one of baseball’s earliest (and unsung) champions.

SEWING SCHOOL~A. Petronis Plumley & Andria Lisle

Sewing School: 21 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make [Spiral-bound]

Gr 2-8-These projects were tested by kids between the ages of 5 and 13, and there is no denying their appeal or their ability to instruct and inspire. After learning the basics (threading a needle, knots, simple stitches), beginners can easily dive into the initial projects-a needle holder and pincushion. A ratings system guides intermediate sewers to items that require more skill, like doll clothing and skirts, with plenty of tasks in between that build confidence and experience. Almost everything is hand sewn, with any machine use acknowledged in the "Note for Grown-Ups" sections that identify the steps requiring adult help. The authors have a fun and encouraging writing style, offering tips to personalize projects and breezily stressing that results do not have to be perfect. Also helpful are the practical techniques like repairing rips and holes or replacing buttons. Bright photos add to the enjoyment and provide guidance for the step-by-step instructions. A "Sewing School Dictionary" and "Resource Guide" are included. However, librarians may find that the ebook binding and the attached envelope of patterns will make it difficult to keep everything complete and intact. These features make the book better suited as an excellent gift idea for creative kids or for adults conducting youth-centered group activities.-Joanna K. Sew What! Bags: 18 Pattern-Free Projects You Can Customize to Fit Your Needs [Hardcover]

It's Not Your Fault, by E. Barling

this book is a great reference if you are struggling with weight issues.

review from amazon:  The plight of overweight and obese Americans has fostered a national debate that has poured over into television talk shows such as Oprah and the Nightly News. Oprah Winfrey devoted an entire show to the N.Y. Times Bestseller, Women, Food and God, asking viewers to email their comments to her web page. Our reactions to the limited theories advanced on that show are contained in the book. American obesity rates are the highest in the world. Sixty-eight percent of adults are categorized as overweight. One-third of them are diagnosed as clinically obese. There are nearly 7 million overweight and obese children in the U.S. today. Childhood obesity statistics show that obese children have a 70% chance of becoming obese adults. The percentage increases to 80% if either one or both parents is obese as well. Americans did not get fat overnight nor did some mosquito spread a deadly virus that causes obesity. Eating until becoming obese is now the leader in American addictions surpassing cigarettes and alcohol. There are tangible reasons why Americans are gaining weight, becoming obese or cannot lose it. The so-called "healthy foods" you're eating are making you fat and ill. The research cited in the Reference section proves that weight gain and obesity are the result of an addiction to many chemical food ingredients, the dangers of genetically modified fruits and vegetables and the damage to the human body caused by foods containing synthetic growth hormones, carcinogens and antibiotics found in factory farmed meats and dairy. We ask and answer the questions: Are you eating a lot of salads but still gaining weight? Juicing and still gaining weight? Drinking so-called health food shakes to lose weight without success? Changing your diet so often you feel like a yo-yo? Can't stop eating? Finding working out impossible because you are getting too overweight to walk, jog or exercise for very long? Are you considering a drastic means to lose weight such as liposuction, gastric bypass or lap-band surgeries? PLEASE STOP NOW. It's Not Your Fault! The only sacrifice is switching brands containing dangerous chemical additives for a healthier version. We teach you how to do it. It's easier than you think. The book describes the causes of food cravings, overeating, addiction and discuss food allergies, delayed food intolerance and the dangerous addictive chemicals used by food manufacturers that cause the compulsive/obsessive eating that leads to obesity. We offer a 90-day challenge and easy 12-step dieting rules that can start readers on their way to losing weight. Diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses are complications caused by weight gain. This book enlightens and empowers people to lose weight and improve their health. We also discuss how certain chemical food addictions in children originate with the eating habits of pregnant mothers that start in vitro. We offer important information to help expectant mothers stop the cycle of addiction. "I'm having great fun already with the book. Fascinating read. And extremely informative. I'm appalled at the extent of my ignorance!" Barbara Paskin, BBC

One Yard Wonders, R. Yaker and P. Hoskins

    Loved THIS book!

For both novice and accomplished sewers, this spiral-bound guide offers directions that are precisely, clearly, and buoyantly written as the authors share 101 sewing projects requiring only a yard of fabric, including apparel, toys, accessories (human and pet), dresser organizers, and stuffed animals. For each “recipe,” the authors, in well-ordered fashion, list necessary materials and then take the reader-crafter through clearly numbered, carefully explained directions to create a successful final product. For each project, too, a pattern schematic is matched on the opposite page with a full-color photograph of the finished project. This is a fundamental crafts book appropriate for most crafts collections.

Around the Corner ~Crochet Borders, Edie Eckman

Around the Corner Crochet Borders: 150 Colorful, Creative Edging Designs with Charts and Instructions for Turning the Corner Perfectly Every Time

When it comes time to put the finishing touches on the edges of a fiber project, a crochet border is the perfect solution. Edgings are essential adornments to the most popular knit and crochet pieces blankets, scarves, and afghans. But borders can do so much more; they give handmade goods a delightful finishing touch, serve as focal points, tidy uneven edges, and add handcrafted flair to store-bought apparel.

Borders often require turning a corner shaping the edgings around a 90-degree angle without breaking the pattern. This is rarely simple; add too few stitches at a corner and the work rounds inward; too many stitches, and the piece begins to ruffle awkwardly. Unfortunately, most published edging patterns fail to include specific instructions for turning the corner, leaving crafters to fend for themselves.

Edie Eckman comes to the rescue in Around-the-Corner Crochet Borders, a collection of 150 colorful crochet frames, each with detailed instructions for working around a corner. Instructions are offered both as text and as charts for working in-the-round; back-and-forth charts are also included for when that method is more appropriate. Photographs of finished borders, each turning a 90-degree corner, allow readers to see the details up close. Borders range from the delicate to the flamboyant and are sure to appeal to a new generation of trend-setting crafters.

Offering practical solutions to one of needlecrafts most vexing challenges, Around-the-Corner Crochet Borders is an essential addition to every crocheters reference library. With this book, marvelous crochet borders are just around the corner.

love this book~a great quick reference for the busy crocheter!

    Flavors, by Emily Sue Harvey

Not yet released. This is a great book.
All your emotions ignited in this sweet book.

Emily Sue Harvey’s first novel, Song of Renewal, was praised by New York Times bestselling author Jill Marie Landis as “an uplifting, heartwarming story,” by bestselling author Kay Allenbaugh as a work that will “linger in the memory long after readers put it aside,” and by Coffee Time Romance as “a must-read book for anyone doing a little soul searching.” New York Times bestselling author Steve Berry said, “It captures your attention, and whets your appetite for more,” while Peeking between the Pages called it “quite simply a beautiful book.”

Now, in Flavors, this master storyteller of the human heart sweeps us along with twelve-year-old Sadie Ann Melton as she enters a life-altering season. The summer of 1950 will change everything for her. For in that summer, she will embark on an odyssey at once heartbreakingly tender and crushingly brutal. At times, she will experience more darkness than she has ever witnessed before. At others, she will thrill to lightness and joy she never imagined. By summer’s end, the Melton women in Sadie’s journey &ndash loving her, coaxing her, and commanding her &ndash will help shape her into the woman she becomes. And they will expose Sadie to all of the flavors of life as she savors the world that she brings into being.

Filled with charm, wisdom, and the smorgasbord of emotions that comes with the first steps into adulthood, Flavors once again proves Emily Sue Harvey’s unique ability to touch our souls with her unforgettable stories.

Something doesn't make sense. Michelle and her best friend, Tami, team up with Brad to investigate the family's disappearance, but it's not easy. Not only do they have to dodge Michelle's demanding, nosey mother, but they also have to sneak around the neighborhood while avoiding arrest for trespassing. Dust and Other Poems

    by Thomas Noel Smith

The works in "Dust and other poems" are a collection of works that address the human condition-from our origins to our movement and development through time. Some of the works are heartwarming. Some are disquieting. Each poem attempts to engage the mind, touch the heart, and invigorate the spirit. Poetry is the music of life that sings of where we've been and inspires us to reach for a sense of perfection in our lives that we can achieve.

The Day Before the Berlin Wall

The Day Before the Berlin Wall: Could We Have Stopped It?: An Alternate History of Cold War Espionage , by T.H.E Hill

    Product Description

The plot is based on a "legend" that was still being told by U.S. Army soldiers in Berlin in the mid-1970s. According to the legend, we had advance knowledge of the wall, and we knew that the East-German troops who were going to build it had been told to halt construction if the Americans were to take aggressive action to stop them. In Hill's version of the tale, a young American sergeant is the one who gets this piece of intelligence, but he is in East Berlin and has to get back to his unit to report it. The Stasi (the East German secret police) are prepared to kill to keep him from reporting it. They have killed his postmistress, and framed him for her murder. Now it is not only the Stasi, and the Vopos (the East-German "People's" Police), but also the West-Berlin municipal Polizei and the U.S. Army MPs who are after him. It's the day before construction is scheduled to start, and time is running out, so the sergeant is running as fast as he can. The key question of the novel is "even if he is lucky enough to make it back across the border, will anybody in the West believe what he has to say and take action on it before it is too late?" History says that he either didn't make it, or they didn't believe him.

    About the Author

T.H.E. Hill served with the U.S. Army Security Agency at Field Station Berlin in the mid-1970s, after a tour at Herzo Base in the late 1960s. He is a three-time graduate of the Defense Language Institute (DLIWC) in Monterey, California, the alumni of which are called “Monterey Marys”. The Army taught him to speak Russian, Polish, and Czech; three tours in Germany taught him to speak German, and his wife taught him to speak Dutch. He has been a writer his entire adult life, but now retired from Federal Service, he writes what he wants, instead of the things that others tasked him to write while he was still working.

Deed So by Katharine A. Russell

It is 1962, and Agnes Hayden Bashford, Haddie, a brainy Southern teen from a tradition-bound family, dreams of breaking free from suffocating expectations placed on girls and from Wicomico Corners. She vows to escape to the exhilarating world beyond its narrow borders, like her handsome, older friend Gideon Albright who is going to Vietnam. A series of shocking incidents brings the outside world crashing down on her peaceful village, exposing long-buried family secrets and setting Haddie on a collision course with an unstable firebrand who will have to silence her to protect his identity. Haddie witnesses the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white down-on-his-luck farmer trying to protect his retarded son. The resulting murder trial attracts outside agitators and political aspirants, and pits townspeople against each other. Excited about being a witness in the trial, Haddie sees her moment of notoriety dissolve into frustration and discomfort and tragedy claim the people around her. The racially-charged case exposes civic fault lines and secrets within Haddie's own family, shattering her comfortable home life, and unleashes an arsonist who terrorizes the community by night. In Deed So, a young girl and an entire town lose their innocence in the last year of innocence, the year before the Kennedy assassination, the civil rights struggle, feminist activism and the Vietnam War changed America forever.
