Sandra Francis is an RN and a cultural anthropologist working in the field of medical anthropology. Her doctoral research was on the topic of Navajo healing ceremonies. She was particularly interested in the holistic approach of the Navajos and in their use of song, dance, prayer, and art to help patients regain hozho (balance). This interest in wholeness and healing inspired her first novel: The Crystal Staircase: A Woman's Journey, which tells the story of four "wounded healers" who manage, during a week-long retreat, to heal themselves and each other in "graceful and loving ways."
