THE GREAT CARP ESCAPE by Irish Beth Maddock

click to purchase

Tadpoles, clams, and minnows—wow! For siblings Beth and Paul, growing up on a lake is fun... until they’re startled by a “fishy” find along the shoreline. When they discover the scaly, moustached carp, they become afraid.
Seasons pass, and Beth and Paul avoid the swampy reeds at all costs—until a flood brings about a life-or-death situation for the creepy looking carp, right in their own backyard!
With guidance from their father, will Beth and Paul be able to overcome their apprehensions about the carp and help save them before it’s too late?

Respect all life. That is the key to this book. The moral of the story. I really enjoyed this sweet children's book. Appropriate for even the youngest child. Parents will love it too! Great illustrations as well.

Once you read the passage you turn to the right side of the page and write, sort of like a journal prompt, your opinion, feelings, story. A small paperback must-own little book to document your feelings and thoughts. Great little read.

Surviving Life Through Faith, Hope and Love by Melissa M. Carson

I have been blessed to share Cori's journey through life. I have also discovered that life isn't short of resources; it is about the opportunities that we have been given. I have found that life begins at the end of your comfort zone, and doing things that used to be "outside the box" challenges the opinions of one's single-minded beliefs. You would think that by surviving with limitations, you're grounded or destined to only live life within your abilities and not beyond. Do not allow your restrictions to be an excuse to ground you. Do not accept that you can only live a certain life. Cori has taught me to think of a life without boundaries. Allow the sunshine to bring warmth upon your face and smile at those who are inexperienced or misguided to the fact that you are significant-challenged, but just as important. Being impaired and nonverbal does not define your life. It's the life that was given; this is who you are, and this is who we remain. We hope that you will perceive our journey as encouragement and inspiration, to live outside the box with no boundaries and to have faith in yourself and be certain of change. I feel that life just falls into place, since real life's destiny is not of our own choosing. The true measure of a person's strength is how we continue to exist when that moment does arrive. This is our journey we share with you to learn there are no limits to the life of a cerebral palsy child can have.

About the Author

Melissa Carson, a resident of Northern California has two beautiful young adult children; her son Michael is a United States Army veteran, and her daughter Cori has cerebral palsy. She is a published poet and an active member of the National Transportation Defense Association, San Joaquin Valley Chapter. She is also a former member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers. Her heritage is from Newfoundland, Canada and the United States.
Our journey as parents of our children can be at times challenging, but for the most part it has been rewarding, always believing that there are no boundaries for a child with Cerebral Palsy or any other disabilities.

Metaphysics: Living Beyond the Physical Realm by Gary M. Levin

Metaphysics: Living Beyond the Physical Realm

Is it sheer coincidence you are reading these words? Consider this: Things happen for a reason. This is the Universe at work. This is living beyond the physical realm. This is metaphysics. Metaphysics: Living Beyond the Physical Realm is an introductory guide to the fascinating world of metaphysics and New Age thinking. This movement melds elements of older spiritual and religious traditions with modern thought and encompasses a wide range of ideas-including personal, spiritual growth (as opposed to religious growth), self-realization, crystals, chakras, affirmations, manifestations, and other metaphysical tools in the Universe. A better understanding of the metaphysical sciences can help you open up to a larger dimension of reality. Learn about metaphysical and New Age Thinking and how to better deal with the challenges that life throws at you. Develop and strengthen your intuition. Incorporate elements like mediation, spirit guides, guardian angels, shamanic journeying, and more. Above all, enjoy this incredible journey!

A very interesting read. I am familiar with metaphysics, but am no expert. I do agree things happen for a reason. I believe this is a must read for everyone, not just people into metaphysics. Great small, quick read!

The Roving Tree, by Elsie Augustave

Elsie Augustave's debut novel, The Roving Tree, explores multiple themes: separation and loss, rootlessness, the impact of class privilege and color consciousness, and the search for cultural identity. The central character, Iris Odys, is the offspring of Hagathe, a Haitian maid, and Brahami, a French-educated mulatto father who cares little about his child.

Hagathe, who had always dreamt of a better life for her child, is presented with the perfect opportunity when Iris is five years old. Adopted by a white American couple, an anthropologist and art gallery owner, Iris is transported from her tiny remote Haitian village, Monn Neg, to an American suburb.

The Roving Tree illuminates how imperfectly assimilated adoptees struggle to remember their original voices and recapture their personal histories and cultural legacy. Set between two worlds, suburban America and Haiti under the oppressive regime of Papa Doc's Tanton Macoutes, the novel offers a unique literary glimpse into the deeply entrenched class discrimination and political repression of Haiti during the Duvalier era, along with the subtle but nonetheless dangerous effects of American racism.

Told from beyond the grave, Iris seamlessly shares her poignant and pivotal life experiences. The Roving Tree, underscored by the spiritual wisdom of Haitian griots, offers insightful revelations of the importance of significant relationships with family and friends. Years later, we see how these elements are transformative to Iris's intense love affair, and her personal and professional growth. Universal truths resonate beyond the pages of this work.
